Spelunking Cave – The Facts

Caving

Spelunking cave is a sporting / recreational activity that involves cave exploration. While this activity is usually done for fun and recreation, it can also have cultural and scientific values and merit, because it might lead to the discovery of hitherto unknown animals. The terms “spelunking” and “caving” are synonymous.

Caving Spelunking Activities

Usually, caving begins with a group of people who look for a cave they wish to explore, don the appropriate gear and venture into it. The activity includes an in-depth exploration of the cave, checking out underground rivers, rock formations and other features inside the cave. For safety reasons the activity is done in groups and, usually, in caves that have been already mapped.

Regardless of the cave they decide to explore, it’s imperative that the explorers wear the proper equipment such as helmets, knee and elbow pads, suits etc. Helmets and headlamps are especially important in spelunking cave activities because it provides protection from falling debris. In addition, you will also need carabineers, anchor points, ropes and other equipment. Besides maps and heavy duty flashlights, modern cave explorers use GPS. However, GPS can be unreliable underground so maps and other communications equipment are necessary.

A Fun and Educational Activity

Caving spelunking may involve the exploration of caves large and small, but as noted the one thing these activities have in common is that several people participate in it. Even when there are several people in a group, it is not recommended that they split up, and beginners are advised to go only when in the company of experienced cavers. Because of the popularity of this activity, trips and explorations are now being offered by professionals with full supervision.

As noted earlier, this activity can also be educational and unearth archaeological discoveries. There is nothing surprising about this since men have been exploring caves for thousands of years and have left their mark in them. In addition, primitive man associated caves with power and mysticism. Still other cultures have viewed caves with fear and superstition and performed rituals in them, and of course they have been used for habitation as well. In short, it has had a long connection with humans and continues to do so.

Because of these, it’s only natural that cavers uncover animal species or even relics during their exploration. By understanding what is spelunking cave you develop an understanding of what it is all about and why people are fascinated by it.
