What is Rock Climbing?

Rock Climbing

Learning how to rock climb is not that difficult provided you have the right equipment and gotten training from a qualified instructor. If you’re just starting out you don’t need a lot of complicated gear, but at the very least you should have climbing shoes, a belay device, locking carabineers and a harness.

Harnesses and Other Gear

If you want to know rock climbing basics you’ll need a quality harness, one with padded waist belts, a waist belt, gear loops for the carabineers, fitted leg loops and a belay loop. For safety purposes, your waist belt has to be buckled snugly over your hipbones, and the leg loops are comfortable but not to the point they sag.

For the carabiners you need at least three connected to your harness all the time. One is for your belay device, the other will be used for clipping on the anchor, and the last is for emergency. If you’re learning how to rock climb you should get either a spring loaded locker or screw gate, although the former is preferred by many.

Climbing Shoes and Chalk Bags

Good rock climbing shoes are necessary for your comfort and safety. There are many types available but the best ones have a special support for climbing, and they have a “sticky” feature that attaches itself to rocks so you have better grip. You might also consider taking along a chalk bag if your hands feel sweaty and it’s causing you to lose your grip. If you study rock climbing basics you’ll learn quickly that chalk is used to improve grip the way that gymnasts use them. Note that chalks are not always necessary, but if you’re just starting out, it’s good to have them so you can feel comfortable about your grip.

Safety Tips

Even if you have all the safety gear in the world, you should still get a qualified instructor. Even if you think you know what you’re doing, a first time rock climber should never proceed alone and instead have an experienced climber along in case something happens.

Finally you need to practice a lot. If you want to know what rock climbing entails, you must learn to ask questions and do some research especially when it comes to buying and using the right gear. If you’re not sure what gear to get, ask your instructor as he should be able to provide you with all the facts.
