Best Hiking Gear for Cold and Warm Hiking

Hiking essentials for all

Hiking in cold weather and hiking in hot weather presents two different challenges. When hiking in cold weather, the goal of a hiker is to stay dry and warm. This can be achieved by efficient layering, or putting on multiple layers of clothes. On the other hand, humidity can tire out even the most physically-fit hiker. It is thus crucial for hikers to have the appropriate hiking accessories during cold and hot weather.

Hiking in Cold Weather

Dressing in several lighter layers allows a hiker to adapt more efficiently to changing weather conditions. A hiker can remove or add an extra layer of cloth depending on the weather or the difficulty of the terrain at any given time.  The base layer should be made of thermal underwear, while the middle layer is the prime insulating layer. Hikers may choose the common fleece jacket for this purpose, although a lightweight fill jacket can also be used as the middle bay. The outer layer, on the other hand, should be made of water-resistant fabric.

Footwear is one of the hiking essentials for cold weather mountaineering. An insulated hiking boot is considered one of the best hiking gear for winter mountaineering as it allows the users to make kicking steps in the snow. For light hiking or ice fishing, a classic winter boot should be enough as long as it provides warmth and water resistance. Gloves are another of those hiking accessories for cold weather hiking. As hiking essentials, gloves will keep your hands warm especially since this is one part of the body likely to feel the cold first.

Hiking in Hot Weather

In hiking during hot weather, the most common mistake of first-time hikers is to bring cotton shirts. However, an experienced hiker will tell you that cotton clothes are not ideal for hot weather hiking as cotton tends to retain the moisture. It would stick to the skin aside from taking a long time to dry. Instead, use long sleeve shirts made of polyester to protect your skin against the harsh rays of the sun.

For shoes, find a lightweight and breathable shoe that will allow you to walk comfortably. Waterproof footwear may be the best hiking gear during winter, but it is not advisable to use it during the summer months as it can cause excessive sweating in the feet that may lead to blisters. For socks, wear one made of synthetic wool as it absorbs moisture from the skin, aside from being lightweight.
